The Transformations in Society and Environmental Policy theme within SAGES is a vibrant theme. Alongside Theme 4 research, the cross-cutting theme enhances the work of Themes 1 to 3 by ensuring that the latest scientific advancements are effectively translated to meet the needs of policymakers, industry, businesses, and other users of our research.
The theme includes a range of areas of interest to advance the understanding individual and social behaviour in geoscience, crucial for addressing a range of environmental and societal challenges. Risk perception and response to natural hazards, such as earthquakes and floods, are essential for disaster risk reduction. Societies must also adapt to the impacts of climate change, requiring both individual actions, like reducing carbon footprints, and collective efforts to support climate policies. Geoscience intersects with social justice, where access to natural resources can be influenced by political and social behaviour, making equitable distribution and environmental justice important areas of focus.
Understanding of geoscience issues, such as groundwater depletion, and soil erosion, is vital for informed decision-making and effective resource management including enhancing ecosystem services by analysing the benefits nature offers, and how these services contribute to societal well-being. They also explore land use, landscapes, and soils, focusing on how human activities affect soil health and sustainable land management. Furthermore, they investigate the link between human health and the environment, emphasizing the positive impact of green spaces and air quality on overall wellbeing.
Decisions about land use, shaped by economic and cultural factors, have long-term environmental consequences, making sustainable land management critical. Encouraging responsible environmental stewardship through better consumption and waste management practices is essential for resource sustainability. Effective communication between scientists, policymakers, and the public is key to promoting awareness and action on geoscience issues.
