VAlIDATE: VOLCANOES – MONITORING THEIR INTERACTION WITH DIVERSE EARTH & HUMAN ENVIRONMENTS led by Dr Matteo Spagnolo, University of Aberdeen.
Forecasting volcanic eruptions and the interaction with Earth’s atmospheric and surface processes as well as monitoring Earth’s resources in volcanic settings are among some of the most important challenges humanity faces. The aim of VALIDATE is to address issues of fundamental and technological importance in volcano monitoring with a focus on their interplay with diverse Earth environments, resource monitoring, hazard, and human resilience, therefore including all SAGES themes. The long-term outcome will be an improved platform devised for researchers in any volcano-related discipline to apply for large-, medium-, and small-scale funding. The short-term outcome will be to establish connections between these disciplines in order to produce high-impact research and awareness regarding volcano-related settings.
The VALIDATE Forum activities initially involved a number of Scottish based workshops and an EGU (Vienna) townhall meeting and were led by Luca de Siena (University of Aberdeen). The ultimate aim of the VALIDATE workshops was to devise an improved platform for researchers in any volcano-related discipline to apply for funding and to produce high impact research and awareness regarding volcano-related settings.
The Forum, now led by Matteo Spagnolo (University of Aberdeen), has moved forward with a specific focus on the interaction between glacier and volcanoes, also thanks to some Leverhulme and NERC funding secured by some of us to study this particularly interesting relationship. Activities planned for the near future include a pre-EGU meeting in Vienna with the research group of TeMas, which involves a number of German researchers with an interest in magmatic processes. The Forum is also planning to attend a two-day conference in Lancaster on the theme of volcanic-glacier interaction.
FIRST VAlIDATE MEETING
The first of a series of workshops that will concentrate on volcano monitoring and forecasting will be held at the University of Aberdeen on 23 January 2017.
The VAlIDATE workshops are being led by Luca De Siena from the University’s School of Geosciences, following a funding award from the Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment and Society (SAGES).
The first workshop will be held at the Sir Duncan Rice Library on Monday, January 23rd, from 10am to 5pm. Anyone who is interested in attending is invited to contact Dr De Siena to register their interest.

SECOND VAlIDATE MEETING
The 2nd VAlIDATE meeting led by Dr Luca De Siena from the University of Aberdeen and Dr Andrew Bell from the University of Edinburgh, following a funding award from the Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment and Society (SAGES), will be held at the University of Edinburgh on Friday 16 June 2017.

THIRD VAlIDATE MEETING
The 3rd VAlIDATE meeting led by Dr Luca De Siena from the University of Aberdeen and Dr Irena Connon, University of Dundee; following a funding award from the Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment and Society (SAGES); will be held at the University of Dundee on Monday 04 September 2017.
The meeting will be focused on the Social dimension of volcano-related hazard.

SAGES VALIDATE Town Hall meeting – EGU2018 – 12/04/2018, 19:00-20:00
SAGES has funded the Town Hall meeting in subject through the PEER Scheme at the European Geosciences Union. The meeting is designed to showcase the activity of the VALIDATE forum to the international community, but is also more widely intended as an assembly point for our community. International researchers of different disciplines will attend the meeting in order to liaise with Scottish researchers and continue/start cooperation for writing proposals for EU funding. With this Town Hall meeting, we will try and establish SAGES as a permanent partner for EGU as well as increase visibility for Scottish research.
Thanks to the funding, catering will be offered to participants and flyers will be distributed at the conference prior to the event. A splinter meeting will precede the Town Hall meeting. Attendance is reserved to SAGES members only: here, we would like to discuss the state-of-the-art of all Fora and Themes, so the presence of Fora leaders and researchers who received funding from SAGES would be greatly appreciated.
