Business/Industry Engagement Grant

The Business-Industry Engagement Grant (BIEG) is designed to support SAGES faculty and postdoctoral members seeking to develop research engagement with businesses and/or industry, with the specific goal of leveraging external research funding.

Applications must involve participants from at least two SAGES institutions, with a designated co-lead from each institution. BIEG funding is not intended to support applications to traditional academic funding bodies such as UKRI, the EU, or charitable organisations. Instead, applicants should focus on identifying, exploring, and developing opportunities to access new funding streams from the business and/or industrial sectors.

If you are unsure whether your proposed activity aligns with the scheme's objectives, please contact us for further guidance.

Applications can request up to £1,500, which may be supplemented with additional funding sources where appropriate. Funding can be used to support activities such as:

  • Networking events or workshops that bring together academic researchers and business/industry partners to foster collaboration, enhance mutual understanding of needs and priorities, and explore how academic expertise can address industry challenges.
  • Proposal development workshops that enable academic and business/industry collaborators to work together in the development of a funding application or commercial partnership opportunity.

The Lead Awardee will not be eligible to apply for further funding under this scheme for a period of one year following completion of the funded activity. Repeat applications for similar activities are unlikely to be supported. If you are unsure whether a proposed application would be eligible, please contact SAGES for advice.

Awardees are required to submit a brief report to SAGES and their institutional Executive Committee (ExCom) representative upon completion of the funded activity, outlining how the award was used and the outcomes achieved.

If the BIEG award contributes to the successful acquisition of research funding, the establishment of new partnerships, or any other tangible research outcomes, awardees should notify SAGES and their institutional ExCom representative. Please provide a brief summary of the outcome and explain the contribution that the BIEG award made in enabling or supporting its achievement.

Applications may be submitted at any time, as this is an open call with no application deadline.

All applications will be reviewed by members of the SAGES Research & Innovation Committee, with the aim to have a decision taken within 4 weeks of application receipt.
