Professor Brice Rea - Director
Professor Brice Rea has been appointed as Director of SAGES with effect from 1st July 2025. Brice is based at the School of Geosciences in the University of Aberdeen.
Professor Brice Rea is a glaciologist with a wide range of research interests related to the broad area of cryosphere and climate, past present and future. He uses a range of techniques for his research including analogue modelling, geochronology, GIS and remote sensing, numerical modelling and empirical data collection. He has undertaken many field campaigns in the Arctic, including a visit to the North Pole, mid-latitudes and high mountains. He is a graduate of Queen’s University Belfast, both BSc. (1990) and PhD (1994) and completed his first postdoc there, moving subsequently to Cardiff University, University of Leicester and then to his present institution, the University of Aberdeen, in 2004. He has previously been Head of Geography and Environment, served as an elected Senator for eight years and is the current School Director of Research. He is one of the NERC Pool of Chairs, currently with responsibility for the Large Grants Panel. Brice has been a member of SAGES since its inception, has been a member of the Executive Committee since 2014, serving as the Chair between 2016-2023, and was a co-lead of the FIORD Forum (predecessor of CryoExchange). He has been an active member of the SAGES community throughout its history and has attended most of the Annual Science Meetings. He brings a wealth of experience to SAGES, and values enormously what it offers to the Scottish research community.
Carol Thomson - Administrator
Carol is based at the University of Glasgow and provides administrative and finance support for the SAGES Directorate, Committees, Theme and Fora leaders and members.
