Unexplored transitions between forests and savannas in Africa
My PhD research focuses on the floristic, structural and functional thresholds that plant communities must cross in order to switch biomes. I am interested in the drivers of these switches and how these biomes will respond to climate change. Will the Congo forests become more open and prone to fires? Will the vast grasslands become more woody and dense? These changes will have important consequences for the people that utilise these environments.
