PhD Studentships 2017: Process and Timeline

SAGES pools world-leading expertise in geoscience and environmental science from across Scotland’s research base, creating a multi-disciplinary alliance at the forefront of earth and environmental research. We are a partnership between the Universities of Aberdeen, Abertay, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews, Stirling, SAMS UHI, SUERC and the West of Scotland.

SAGES PhD funding announcements of opportunity (AOO) provides the detail of the 2017 studentships. Here we present the procedure for appointing the candidates.

SAGES welcomes all applications. We are committed to equality of opportunity and non-discrimination. EU applicants are encouraged to apply. SAGES are advertising 12 projects to fund 6 in 2017 (this round) with an additional 3 in 2018. Funding support of up to £100 is available for candidates interview travel expenses.

Process

Deadline for all proposed projects: 28 November 2016

Shortlisting will be achieved through grading the projects based on;
1. A fit to SAGES themes
2. Evidence for match funding
3. Diversity of SAGES supervisory partners
4. Novel, innovative and strategic geoscience for Scotland

Final 12 shortlist decision: 15 December 2016
The 12 will be advertised throughout Dec 16 – Jan 17.
Interviews will be conducted at the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation (ECCI) over the 20 – 23 February 2017. Up to two candidates for each short-listed project will be called for interview. The interview panel will comprise one SAGES supervisor, the Graduate School Convenor (John Howe) and a member of the SAGES Research & Innovation Committee. The quality of the candidates will be the main criterion driving the selection.

The announcement of the successful candidates will be made shortly after interviews conclude in February 2017.

September/October 2017 start for the 6 successful studentships.
